Stadtwerke Witten relies on high power charging from Compleo
Efficient, compact, barrier-free: New eTower 200 fast-charging technology complements charging infrastructure in the city
Dortmund, May 27, 2025 – Where should new e-charging stations be installed? Stadtwerke Witten is not just leaving this question to the planners, but has been relying on public participation for years. As a pioneer in digital citizen participation, residents of the city of 92,000 inhabitants in the south-eastern Ruhr region can tell us online where they think charging stations would be useful. The experts from Compleo Charging Solutions, a KOSTAL Group company, have been among the municipal utilities' charging technology partners for many years. Now the first high power charger (HPC) eTower 200 from Compleo, a particularly powerful, user-friendly and low-noise charging technology, has been put into operation at the medical town hall in Witten-Herbede. Compleo Charging Solutions is one of the leading providers of charging technology for electric vehicles in Europe.
If you want to describe the cooperation between Stadtwerke Witten and Compleo in one word, the first thing that comes to mind is “speed”. On the one hand, Stadtwerke Witten started working on the topic of e-mobility and charging infrastructure at a very early stage. Secondly, it only took three months from planning to commissioning of the eTower. Stadtwerke Witten is part of Energie- und Wasserversorgung Mittleres Ruhrgebiet, EWMR for short, with which Compleo has maintained a close partnership for many years. “We became aware of Compleo in 2017 and then opted for charging technology from this provider. The compliance of Compleo's solutions with calibration law was a decisive factor at the time,” reports Sören Braun, Group Manager Electromobility, Stadtwerke Witten GmbH.
More than 50 AC and DC charging stations from Compleo are currently in use in Witten: the AC solution DUO ims, the DC station CITO 500 and, as the latest technology, the eTower 200. DUO ims was specially developed for direct connection to the public distribution grid. As an all-in-one charging station, all components are already integrated, saving installation time and costs. The CITO 500 enables fast charging even at limited grid connections. SAM technology also enables billing in compliance with calibration law. The eTower is particularly flexible to install and barrier-free to operate. The first eTower in Witten-Herbede will be followed by others in the city in the coming months.
But why did they choose this particular loader? Braun explains: “It was mainly due to its compact back-to-wall or back-to-back design.” With a depth of just 450 millimetres and front access for servicing, the eTower stands for efficient use of space. All components can be accessed directly via a single door. “We can install this charging technology without having to sacrifice parking spaces, for example. That would not have been possible with other solutions.” The 29 kW plug-in modules of the eTower are also interesting. The HPC charger is equipped with seven of these modules, which allow the total output of up to 200 kW to be finely distributed to one or two vehicles as required - for maximum efficiency and improved capacity utilization. Depending on the location, significant additional revenue per station can be achieved each year compared to stations with 50 kW modules. As the eTower was installed in an urban environment, it also scores with particularly low noise emissions. At a distance of three meters from the device, the sound pressure level is 49.4 decibels, A-weighted (dBA). In addition to the technological aspects, the support provided by Compleo also deserves a positive mention.
Braun sums up: “We see ourselves as an important partner, especially in the municipality, for advancing the topic of e-mobility. Compleo supports us with reliable technology and technical expertise. We don't select new locations on our own: citizens can submit proposals via an online participation tool that was established early on, which we then review in terms of economic viability, grid connection and other criteria. In this way, we are gradually creating a needs-based, nationwide network - this is only possible with a strong technology partner like Compleo at our side.”
